Researchers in the social sciences and other disciplines are increasingly faced with the demand to write and implement a data management and sharing plan (see, for example, the EU’s Open Data Pilot under Horizon 2020). By systematically addressing potential sources of errors and threats to data quality throughout the research process, Research Data Management boosts the quality of research outputs and creates transparency and replicability of research findings. In addition, good data management enables data sharing, thereby creating an opportunity for other researchers to re-use data in new research contexts after the original project has ended.


The FOSTER-CESSDA training project, which is part of the FOSTER initiative (www.fosteropenscience.eu), supports European researchers in implementing sustainable data management and sharing concepts in their projects by offering training and resources on these topics.

With the intention of supporting participants in writing a well-structured data management plan, the workshop introduces the core elements of research data management. Specifically, it will address the following topics:
