The enthusiasm on gathering and sharing open data is growing due to better technological tools and external incentives of funding agencies. Scientists are willing to enrich their research with more data, combining different datasets and using tools for visualisation and analysis, but they are still struggling with the proper way to do so. This symposium aims at sharing good practices for researchers on gathering and disseminating good quality data, using interoperable standards and overcoming legal obstacles.

Keynote speakers
This congress will focus on good practices concerning the collecting, structuring, visualising and sharing of research data. In two plenary keynotes by Mireille van Eechoud, Professor of Information Law at the UvA, and Barend Mons, Professor of Bioinformatics at the Leiden University Medical Center, the (im)possibilities and the future of sharing open data will be addressed.

Break-out sessions and useful tips
In several break-out sessions about twenty researchers from various disciplines will share what data challenges they encountered during their research, how they approached them and what tools were helpful.

Exchanging ideas and experiences
The symposium will also offer an opportunity to exchange experiences and ideas: not only between researchers, but also between researchers and service providers regarding data through an information market of research and data services.

For whom?
Researchers of all institutions and disciplines are welcome. The official language at the symposium is English. Registration is mandatory.

Organisation
The symposium Connecting data for research is organised during the International Open Access week on October 19th 2015 by Radboud University, Leiden University, University of Amsterdam, Free University Amsterdam, DANS-KNAW and SURF. It will focus on good practices concerning the collecting, structuring, visualising and sharing of research data. The event is supported by the European Foster Open Science project and OpenAire.
