Melanie Imming EU Projects manager, LIBER  Founded in 1971  More than 400 national, university and other libraries from over 40 countries  We bring our members together through EU Projects and our annual conference. At LIBER we believe that the move towards openness will lead to increased transparency, better quality research, a higher level of citizen engagement, and will accelerate the pace of scientific discovery through the facilitation of data-driven innovation. Melanie ImmingEU Projects manager, LIBER Facilitate Open Science Training for European Research THE CHALLENGE There is a skill gap between the number of researchers and professionals equipped to practice open science and the number that is needed to meet European Commission goals. THE PROJECT FOSTER aims to help and encourage researchers, librarians and other stakeholders in the European Research Area (ERA) to adopt open access and open science as part of their daily workflow. Open Access and Open Science principles are an essential part of knowledge creation and sharing. They directly support the researchers need for greater impact, optimum dissemination of research, while also enabling the engagement of citizen scientists and society at large on societal challenges. Facilitate Open Science Training for European Research The project OBJECTIVES • To support different stakeholders, especially younger researchers, in adopting open access and in complying with the open access policies and rules of participation set out for Horizon 2020 • To integrate open access principles and practice in the current research workflow by targeting the young researcher training environment Facilitate Open Science Training for European Research The project OBJECTIVES • To strengthen institutional training capacity to foster compliance with the open access policies of the ERA and Horizon 2020 (beyond the FOSTER project) • To facilitate the adoption, reinforcement and implementation of open access policies from other European funders, in line with the EC’s recommendation, in partnership with PASTEUR4OA project Facilitate Open Science Training for European Research The project HOW • Identifying already existing content that can be reused in the context of the training activities and repackaging, reformatting them to be used within FOSTER, and developing/creating/enhancing contents as required • Developing the FOSTER Portal to support e-learning, blended learning, self-learning, dissemination of training materials/contents and a Helpdesk Facilitate Open Science Training for European Research The project HOW • Delivery of face-to-face training, especially training trainers/multipliers who can deliver further training and dissemination activities, within institutions, nations or disciplinary communities • The EU is also funding other specific technical and professional support services via the e-Infrastructures WP, e.g. EUDAT2020 and OpenAIRE2020 Facilitate Open Science Training for European Research The project Why does it matter? • Openness will increasingly become a defining and inherent characteristic of all scientific research. • Training is needed to foster new and developing skills (professional, organisational, managerial, intellectual…) in response to new practices, policies, and technologies. • Training materials have been produced independently across the ERA, in a range of disciplinary contexts. • There is a need for these dispersed materials to be evaluated, consolidated, and organised. What is in the FOSTER Portal? What is in the FOSTER Portal? • An e-learning platform that brings together the best training resources for those who need to know more about Open Science, or who need to develop strategies and skills for implementing Open Science practices in their daily workflows. • It contains a growing collection of training materials to meet the needs of many different users, from early-career researchers, to data managers, librarians, funders, and graduate schools. What is in the FOSTER Portal? • All materials are free to use, and can be edited, repurposed, recombined to suit your own training needs. • Many of these materials are being compiled into courses. [Work in progress.] • You can propose courses, and take a course about how to create your own courses out of the FOSTER resources: https://www.fosterop enscience.eu/content /foster-course-cours e-creation • Visit the FOSTER Project website to learn more about the project. • Browse the training portal to locate resources that may be of use to you and your staff. • Notify FOSTER of any additional extant training materials that are not yet in the portal. Use the web form or contact the Helpdesk. • You can also register with FOSTER to upload content to the Portal and stay up-to-date with news and further outputs. • View the events calendar (right) to see if there are any face-to-face trainings, talks or workshops you can attend. • View the list of FOSTER speakers who you may wish to invite to your own training events to speak on related subjects. • Give feedback to the FOSTER project about the quality and effectiveness of the training materials in the portal.
