Open science has become a hot topic in the international research community.  Researchers, however, will only make their work open, if they are confident that their results can be reproduced, and for making their work reproducible they need the right software tools and skills. Research software engineers (RSEs) could provide both software support and implementations of helpful software tools, but for RSEs to be able to do their best work we need to offer them suitable careers - which at the moment is not the case.

In this talk I will give an overview on the role of software for open science. I will discuss ideas on how to grow the RSE community in Munich and on how to support local research groups in implementing best practices in science and software.
